Califa – new Lee Hazlewood compilation on its way

I really love the series that Ace Records have put together that compile obscure covers from top notch 60s singer songwriters. The PF Sloan http://www.amazon.co.uk/Words-Music-P-F-Sloan-Steve-Barri/dp/B003GE69LQ/ref=s… and Jackie de Shannon ones http://www.amazon.co.uk/Breakaway-Songs-Jackie-DeShannon-1961-1967/dp/B001FE1… are unmissable and now comes potentially the best of the lot.

Califa chronicles the songwriting genius of one Lee Hazlewood, a man best known for supplying Nancy Sinatra with some of the very best songs of the 60s (or come to think of it any decade).

Due at the end of August Califa is a Hazlewood’s obessive dream come true. There are interesting covers of his big hits, along with some early 60s obscurities and some genuine, but little heard classics. Chief among these IMO is Ann Magaret’s You Turned My Head Around, which is an amazing psych pop tune. Here’s the original (with rather odd video) along with Dean and Britta’s (of Galaxie 500 fame) recent cover.
