Brazilian Psych Legends Os Mutantes to Release a New Album

On September 7th Os Mutantes release their first new album since 1974’s Tudo Foi Feito Pelo Sol with a disc on ANTI Records entitled Haih.

Formed in Sao Paulo in 1966 by Sergio Dias and his brother Arnaldo, the band created an entirely new sound blending a love of English beat music with American psychedelia against the backdrop of a military coup in their homeland.

Leading players in Gilberto Gil’s Tropicalia movement, the band’s experimental Hendrix-inspired sounds coupled with an overt political message embracing libertarian expression and artistic freedom inspired the nation’s youth, but did not sit so well with the new ruling regime and its ensuing artistic crackdown.

The band recorded six albums, the final two in a prog rock vein, before dissolving in 1978.

Favourites of Kurt Cobain, Beck, Devendra Banhart and the Flaming Lips, the Brazilian psych legends reformed in 2006 with a show at London’s Barbican (Mutantes Ao Vivo, available on CD) and will play a short series of dates across America prior to Haih’s release at the end of August/beginning of September.
