Garage Punk Legend Sky Saxon of The Seeds is Dead

Yep, sorry to be the bringer of sad news, as you’re not likely to have heard it on breakfast TV or even Radio 4, but a true music LEGEND, and I am very well aware as to how much I use that label but in this case it’s beyond question, Sky Sunlight Saxon has passed away. He was admitted into hospital in Austin, Texas on Monday with an undiagnosed condition and passed away this afternoon.

His wife Sabrina made the following announcement: “Sky has passed over and YaHoWha is waiting for him at the gate. He will soon be home with his Father. I’m so sorry I couldn’t keep him here with us. More later. I’m sorry.”

For what it is worth The Seeds were one of my favourite bands, certainly from the States. Never saw him or the band play, though he continued to tour, indeed he played a set in Austin on Saturday night.

I’ve heard stories good, bad and mad about the guy, but now is not the time to tell them. Here at Pop Junkie we celebrate great pop, in all its guises, and there are few greater pop songs in the garage punk vein than Pushin’ Too Hard or, my personal fave,  No Escape.

Evil Hoodoo could not be considered pop, but without this track recorded in 1966 there would surely have been no Birthday Party or JAMC. (Whether that’s a good or bad thing is neither here nor there). If you have never heard it, listen to the youtube clip below and prepare to be stunned.

Sky Saxon RIP.
