Happy Birthday Fred Neil ~ Gone but not Forgotten

Today (March 16th) would have been Fred Neil’s 73rd birthday had he not died eight years ago. Fred who you may ask? I too am relatively new to him; a reclusive and truculent, yet greatly admired, folk-rock songwriter.

Having written Nilsson’s huge billion-seller Everybody’s Talkin’, used as the theme for Midnight Cowboy, he gave it all up to study dolphins. Covered and/or cited as an influence by Dave Crosby, The Lovin Spoonful, Roy Orbison, Tim Buckley, The Coral, Beth Orton, Billy Bragg and Sportique, he has in latter years been reissued by Joe Foster’s Rev-Ola label.

It’s also Jimmy Nail’s birthday but thought we could overlook this milestone. Gunners fans might like to know that today’s also the day that Theo Walcott leaves his teens behind forever.
