Making plans for Nigel – ten tunes for Cloughie junior

I’m sure all at PopJunkie would like to wish “Young Nigel” (as he shall always be known in our house), all the very best in his new role at Derby County.

If not by donning a green sweatshirt, tracksuit bottoms and clipping a few fans behind the ear, we can at least suggest some sounds to give Brian’s boy and his Rams some aural inspiration. For those who haven’t got a clue what I’m on about, 42 year-old Nigel Clough is a football manager and has just been given a job of running a club where his Dad once worked. His Dad was the Messiah named Brian. A living god, a hero and ‘man of the people’. Now he’s a dead god. Gone but not forgotten.

Here’s a few tracks which might just inspire him.

1) Green Shirt – Elvis Costello
2) Y.M.C.A. – Village People (“I said, young man” Geddit?)
3) My Number Nine – Coax (now this is a true lost classic. Exquisite mid-90s paean to the art of the centre-forward sung by The Claim’s David Read. The Claim were yet another great ‘lost’ band)
4) Grandad – Clive Dunn (In his only Cup Final appearance he stepped on to the famous sward holding Terry Venable’s hand wearing a ‘World’s Greatest Grandad’ rosette) I didn’t promise that the songs were going to be any good.
5) Brian’s Song – Michel Legrand. Ditto.
6) Throw all your medals in the dustbin – Lonnie Donegan. I made this one up.
7) We’ve Got the Whole World in our Hands – Nottingham Forest. Unfortunately, this one isn’t made up.
8) A Forest – The Cure
9) Walking the Dog – Rufus Thomas (Brian loved to walk his dog Del Boy in retirement)
10) Ram On – Paul McCartney

That’ll do.
